Just got a SKS. Need some info.
Finally got a 7.62x39 rifle to go with all the ammo I have :applause_
It's a Yugo SKS with matching numbers, a welded-on muzzle brake, and a LARGE amount of nasty cosmoline on it. I've obviously got to take it apart and clean it up before firing it. Does anyone have or have a link to an "owner's manual" or disassembly manual for the SKS? Any info would be helpful. Yes, I already used google. Thanks. |

Here is my Cosmoline recommendation: 1. All metal parts soaked in and scrubbed with Mineral Spirits (toothbrush works great). Then blow them out with an air compressor. Repeat if necessary (if the air compressor reveals more cosmoline - and it will). 2. Boil the trigger group in water. WARNING... will make for a pan that is very hard to clean. Also, will make the house stink. Me? I kinda like the smell :) 3. Bake the wood at @200 degrees until it sweats. Remove the stock and wipe it dry with paper towels. Repeat. WARNING... place the wood on paper towels inside the oven - you don't want cosmoline on the bottom of your oven. They are great guns. Assembly is not that hard once you've done it once. The trick is the little spring behind the trigger guard. That is the final step, but it goes hand-in-hand with the magazine removal. PS - Check the threads of the cleaning rod. On a couple of mine I had to chase them out with a tap/die set. Cleaning rod only comes out with the bayonett at "half-cock". |
Re: Just got a SKS. Need some info.
If you're not quite as thorough as SLV when it comes to cleaning, remove the wood parts and use dish soap, water, a toothbrush, and a good hair dryer on the metal. I don't bother cleaning the wood. The hair dryer dries the thing, but will also liquify the cosmoline so you can wipe it off. I don't really mind a little cosmoline in my guns, just as long as they function properly. It was funny seeing some red greasy spatter on the inside of my dust cover after using my first AK without cleaning it enough :tongue_ma:
www.surplusrifle.com That site has tons of info, SKS is definitely on there. Good luck, congrats! |

Re: Just got a SKS. Need some info.
Good, solid rifles...I know of a few people who were unable to remove the trigger housing until informed that the safe must be on....otherwise it won't budge.
Have fun. |

Re: Just got a SKS. Need some info.
I've got a Yugo SKS. It's large and heavy compared to my Russian SKS, but the Yugo feels very solid and is quite accurate. Mine has the original grenade launcher adapter.

Re: Just got a SKS. Need some info.
BTW... you MUST dissassemble the rectangular bolt and remove the firing pin. This requires punching out a pin which hold the firing pin at the proper angle. Failure to clean out the firing pin channel can result in slam fires. Additionally, you can get aftermarket firing pins with return springs. Some "soft primer" ammo has been known to fire just from the momentum of a loose firing pin.

Re: Just got a SKS. Need some info.
Well guys, I cleaned her up, and it's to the range this weekend. I can't wait, the gun is immaculate now.
PB Blaster was a lifesaver in this cleaning process. Once the majority of the cosmo was off, this stuff and a toothbrush both melted away the rest, and lubricated the moving parts. (it's what I normally use to clean my guns) https://www.expeditionexchange.com/t...7;20023340.jpg |

Don't say I never did anything for you :)
Sorry for the popups but it hosts for free w/out requiring an account. It makes you wait 50 seconds before the download starts. http://upload2.net/page/download/ssF...U/SKS.PDF.html |
Re: Just got a SKS. Need some info.
thr.com is a great general forum for a lot of answers on all firearms. There I learned that Simonof [SKS] built a "slightly" scaled-up lookalike SKS type weapon in WWII. A 4 shot, I think, semi-auto 50 pound anti-tank rifle. Shot their 12.7 mm round[ more powerful than our 50 caliber; about 12.000 foot pounds].
Actually the SKS we know, is a post-war scaled down version of this weapon |
